Auckland is still in water crisis mode, how is water-saving going for you and your family?
As well as water installation at your Auckland home, here are a few tips on saving water at home:

Waterwise in the kitchen

  • Put the plug in the sink when peeling vegetables or washing dishes, don’t leave the water running.
  • Dishwashers use a considerable amount of water, therefore, make sure your dishwasher is full before you run it. Also, if possible, just scrape your dishes instead of rinsing them.
  • Turn your taps off properly.
  • Keep cold drinking water in the fridge so you don’t have to run the tap to get a cold drink. Also, make ice.
  • Rather than boiling your food, simmer and use tight lids to prevent evaporation.
  • Cooking water can be re-used in soups or casseroles, or, cooled down and used to water your plants or garden.
  • Buying a new dishwasher? Check it has at least an AAA water conservation rating.
  • If you wash dishes by hand, wait until you have a good amount to wash and don’t use too much dishwashing detergent to reduce the amount of rinsing required.

Waterwise in the garden

  • Water your garden first thing in the morning or late at night.
  • Check the weather forecast, Mother Nature may take care of your garden watering needs for you.
  • Only water plants when necessary and aim for the roots, not the leaves.
  • Don’t overwater plants.
  • If you have to wash your car, use a bucket and brush, and wash it on the lawn and your lawn gets watered as well.
  • Use compost on your garden to trap in moisture.
  • Avoid watering when it’s windy, as a large portion of the water will go where you don’t need it.
  • Collect rainwater to use for watering your garden.
  • Use recycled water (greywater) that has been collected in your home to water your garden.
  • Don’t mow the lawns too short. A lawn with longer grass holds water and requires less watering.
  • Use a broom to sweep a path rather than hosing it with water.

Waterwise in the Bathroom

  • Don’t leave the water running when you are brushing your teeth or shaving.
  • Put the plug in the sink when washing hands and turn the shower off while washing your hair.
  • Don’t flush unnecessary items down the toilet, such as tissues or anything else that could go in the rubbish bin.
  • Check your toilet for leaks, you could have corroding fixtures or an inefficient toilet.
  • To reduce the amount of water per flush put a small plastic bottle filled with water in the cistern and make sure it doesn’t interfere with the flush mechanism.
  • If you are building or renovating, consider installing modern devices like a dual-flush toilet and a low-flow showerhead.
